Short Term Accommodation (STA)

Short Term Accommodation (STA), including respite, provides participants with temporary accommodation and support away from their usual home. STA offers a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment where participants can develop independent living skills, engage in social and recreational activities, and enjoy new experiences while receiving the care they require.

Purpose of Short Term Accommodation

The purpose of STA is to:

  • Provide temporary accommodation in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Support participants to develop independence and daily living skills.
  • Encourage community participation and social inclusion.
  • Provide opportunities to build confidence and form new friendships.
  • Offer planned respite for families and informal carers.
  • Support participants during transitional periods or unexpected circumstances.
  • Enhance participants overall wellbeing and quality of life.

What is Included in STA

Depending on the participants NDIS plan and individual needs, Short Term Accommodation may include:

  • Safe and comfortable accommodation.
  • Personal care and daily living assistance.
  • Nutritious meals and refreshments.
  • 24-hour support, where required.
  • Community access and recreational activities.
  • Medication support (where appropriate).
  • Assistance with personal goals and skill development.
  • Transport related to STA activities, where included in the participants plan.

Benefits of Short Term Accommodation

STA provides participants with opportunities to:

  • Experience greater independence away from their usual home.

  • Develop communication and social skills.
  • Participate in enjoyable community and recreational activities.
  • Meet new people and establish positive relationships.
  • Learn practical life skills in a supportive environment.
  • Improve emotional wellbeing and reduce social isolation.
  • Enjoy a change of environment while maintaining continuity of care.

Individualised Support

Every participant has unique goals, preferences, and support needs. STA services are tailored to ensure each participant receives person-centred care that aligns with their NDIS plan.

Support workers may assist with:

  • Personal care and hygiene.
  • Meal preparation and nutrition.
  • Mobility and transfers.
  • Medication prompts or assistance.
  • Household tasks.
  • Community outings.
  • Communication support.
  • Behaviour support strategies (where applicable).

Community Participation During STA

Where required, transport support enables participants to safely travel to and from community activities, appointments, education, employment, and recreational programs. Reliable transport reduces barriers to participation and promotes greater independence and inclusion.

Participants are encouraged to take part in meaningful community activities during their stay, including:

  • Parks and outdoor recreation.
  • Shopping and local community visits.
  • Social events and group activities.

STA may be suitable for participants who:

  • Require temporary accommodation and support.
  • Need respite from their usual living arrangements.
  • Wish to develop independent living skills.
  • Would benefit from increased social interaction and community participation.
